Ambreen guides the direction of all City departments and operations. She appoints department directors, oversees employee recruitment, submits the city’s annual budget, and carries out policies and laws as directed by the City Commission.
Ambreen has served in city government for more than twenty years. She has masters’ degrees in Urban and Regional Planning from Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, Fla., as well as in Housing Development from Punjab University, Pakistan. While at FAU, she worked as an intern in the City of Lauderhill's Planning Department when Ilene Lieberman, former Broward County Commissioner, was mayor. In 2012, Ambreen received the first FAU Outstanding Alumni Award for her dedication to the betterment of South Florida's communities, her outstanding work ethic and leadership.
She married Tariq in 1983 and spent a year in China before moving to the United States. After raising two children as a stay-at-home mom, Ambreen returned to school and graduated from FAU in 1993. The next year, she was hired by the City of North Lauderdale as a Community Development Specialist and was soon promoted to City Planner. In 2000, she was appointed to serve as Community Development Director. During her four year tenure in this position, she spearheaded significant economic growth projects, both commercial and residential, in the city. In 2004, Ambreen was promoted to Assistant City Manager where she was part of the administration under two City Managers. From June till September, 2009, she served as Interim City Manager. In October, 2009, the City Commission unanimously appointed her to the position of City Manager.
Ambreen remains current in her profession and is an active member of several professional organizations. These include being named the 2015 Vice President of the BCCMA (Broward County City Managers Association), FCCMA, (Florida City and County Managers Association) and ICMA (International City/County Managers Association) and APA (American Planning Association). She regularly participates in conferences with outcomes that benefit the city’s image and economic standing. She has the unique distinction of being the first female City Manager of North Lauderdale. Apart from spending time with her family, Ambreen enjoys interior decorating and traveling to countries with intriguing cultures and traditions.
